🍚🍳 The Ultimate Comfort Food: Introducing Korean Egg Rice (Gyeran-bap)

Hello, foodies! I am your Korean Sauce Mom.

Think of it as the Korean equivalent of your favorite childhood breakfast or a go-to late-night snack. It's the meal that busy parents whip up for their kids before school, the one college students rely on, and the one adults fondly remember eating while growing up. What You'll Need: Simple Ingredients (For 1 serving)

The beauty of Gyeran-bap lies in its simplicity. You likely have most of these ingredients in your pantry right now!

  • 1 Egg: The star of the show. We prefer a good, rich yolk!

  • 1 Bowl of Cooked Rice: Ideally warm, freshly cooked short-grain rice.

  • 1 Stalk of Green Onion (Scallion): For a little crunch and fresh flavor.

The Perfect Sauce

Mix the following ingredients together in a small bowl:

  • 3 teaspoons of Soy Sauce

  • 3 teaspoons of Finely Chopped Green Onions

  • 1 teaspoon of Sesame Seeds

  • 1 teaspoon of Sesame Oil

Give it a quick stir, and you’re ready to go!

How to Cook Your Gyeran-bap

This is a four-step process that takes less than five minutes. Get ready for deliciousness!

  1. Fry the Egg: Heat a small drizzle of sesame oil in a pan over medium heat. The sesame oil isn't just for flavor; it actually helps to neutralize any slight "eggy" odor, resulting in a cleaner, nuttier taste. Fry your egg sunny-side up, over-easy, or however you prefer. The most traditional way is an over-easy egg with a runny yolk—it’s perfect for mixing into the rice!

  2. Assemble the Base: Scoop your warm rice into a bowl. Place the freshly fried egg right on top of the rice.

  3. Sauce and Mix: Drizzle two teaspoons of your prepared sauce over the egg and rice. Now comes the best part: grab your spoon and thoroughly mix everything together! Break the yolk and let its richness coat every grain of rice.

  4. Enjoy and Customize: Take a big, happy bite! This is your bowl of comfort. If you like it richer, feel free to add a touch more sesame oil or, for an extra indulgent American-style twist, a small pat of butter.

This humble bowl of Gyeran-bap is proof that the most satisfying meals are often the simplest. We hope you try it and make your own delicious memories with this wonderful Korean dish!
